• The debate about the dangers of smoking aside – which I grant are legitimate – many Southern farmers must believe the ramifications of losing the Civil War have never ended. For today the word “tobacco” is just about as taboo as the Rebel flag, or someone playing “Dixie.” I can understand why many feel like the golden crop that made their grandfathers stable, and made their fathers and themselves rich, was essentially rubbed out as part of a continuing economic curse on the South. A curse that started when South Carolina seceded from the Union, then continued through the fall of cotton, and finally the rise and fall of tobacco. There’s not much more the South could be beaten down with, unless they beat the tourists out, and that ain’t gonna happen. You’ll have better luck getting rid of your fire ants.
